Kocurek’s 35th Birthday

Opened in 1986, this year Kocurek Elementary is celebrating its 35th year anniversary. Our school was named after Mr. Willie I. Kocurek, a local Austin icon and civic leader.

For forty years, Willie donated much of his time to education and at the age of 70, became the oldest person ever to graduate from the University of Texas Law School.

Willie was a frequent visitor at our school and on his birthday, October 14th, the students would make red bow-ties in class and wear them around campus to celebrate. The day was coined, 'Willie Kocurek Day'.

Today students will show their koala pride by decorating and wearing their own bow tie to celebrate Willie Kocurek's birthday and to celebrate our school's 35th year anniversary!
